Enrolment Dates for Uni Applications due soon.

28 09 2010

It is coming up to that time of the year that Year 12 students and others are looking at what stage the next phase of life will hold, or at least what to do for 2011.

With most Unis and TAFE’s, applications for enrolment of your preference are required to go through a central admissions processing body. We have collated all the information on each state and the requirements for applying to your Uni of choice.

Also don’t forget that Private Colleges are exempted from some of these processing bodies in some states. Also note that Semester 3 is coming up too for a lot of Private Institutes and some Universities, so check out http://www.studyfinder.com.au/ for courses available that meet your area of interest.

Downward trend in Australian Uni’s – The impact!!!

10 09 2010

One of the biggest questions I ask people is about the reputation of Unis. When you ask people what are the most famous, or popular or best Unis in the world, the typical ones pop up: Cambridge, Oxford, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, MIT and Princeton. There are others in the mix but USA and UK dominate the 15 -17 spots in the world for the best Academic Unis before any other country get a look in.

So where does Australia fair?

Universities across Australia performed worse than last year in the highly regarded QS World University Rankings.

Our top Uni is ANU, Australian National University, based in Canberra they jump in at number 20. GREAT NEWS!?!?!?!?!

Maybe considering they were number 17 in 2009. In fact a majority of Australian Unis dropped rankings from 2009 with some Unis having the biggest drop compared to other Unis around the globe.

Seventeen of the 25 Australian universities included in the top 500 slipped down the list compared to last year. The country’s second and third ranked universities, Sydney and Melbourne, each fell slightly to tie for 36th place.

University’s substantial slump 45 places in the ranking was matched by La Trobe University also plummeting 45 spots to 286th. The biggest drop by any University in the world.

Only a small handful actually climbed the ladder. according to the QS World University Ranking: http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2010/results

So what does this mean for our Higher Education system?

The fact comes down to the student perception and course outcome. In previous posts I have supplied information about the ratings of Universities from an academic and student satisfaction rating. The biggest thing I still stress to people when talking to them about reputation versus cost versus course outcome versus employability is that YOU MUST BE COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR COURSE…YOU DECIDE. Hence why www.studyfinder.com.au is a useful tool when it comes to finding the right course. Look at the big picture, if you are happy with the facilities, location, price and course, then go for it…If you feel it is not for you then find an alternative!

Dont get stuck in the trap that this is the only option for me….WRONG WRONG WRONG. You have options, with technology and the ability to study either in the Classroom, Online or by distance learning you do have options.

But in order to have that we must have above standard teachers/lecturers and relevant course material. This is where pressure  is now being put onto Govt to improve and fund more to maintain the reputation of Australian Education, more so now than ever before.

Our International market is shot and has been badly damaged due to dodgy operators and rogue educational agents coming into the system and ripping off students for a quick dollar then shooting off again without realising the impact it has on the reputation. Now as to date a lot of Institutes from both the Private and Public Education sector have enjoyed the sweet success of the International student market, but this focus and drive to keep the International market has tainted the focus on our home-grown student market – The Aussie student.

Recent studies have shown that Australia has the highest proportion of international students enrolled in tertiary education of anywhere in the world.

That’s a worry for universities, Tafes and Private Colleges so heavily reliant on fee revenue from international students. Overseas student enrolments are expected to halve from next year in response to tighter migration laws. That means many universities and other tertiary institutions will struggle to survive – let alone raise standards.

So is this a cause to the down fall of our rankings? Are we becoming too greedy with the International Dollar? Are we putting profit before education?

I can not answer these only the Institutes, Governments and you can bring answers to these questions. I will say that our focus needs to be regenerated back into our community, focus on the needs of the students in Australia and ignite the passion to have a nation of educated, trained and most importantly “employable” graduates.

The Government need to have more focus on programs aimed at supporting our community and more controls over the International market. We have an watchdogs on almost everything from Petrol, Groceries to Childcare, when will Education see their turn to have someone monitoring the schools/institutes and making sure we provide good quality education!!

So when looking at this list just remember it only paints part of the picture. Reading articles in Media clippings I see that my views are shared by many Australians. Surely the message is clear.
Happy Reading.

I look forward to your comments.
